vs Smallpdf and iLovePDF (cloud tools)
Smallpdf and iLovePDF are mature, well-run services with real security credentials — TLS in transit, ISO/GDPR compliance, and automatic deletion (about one hour for Smallpdf, about two hours for iLovePDF). The difference is architectural: with a cloud tool, your file is uploaded to their servers to be processed, and you're trusting a deletion policy after the fact.
With OnDevicePDF, 22 of our 23 tools never upload the file at all — the work happens in your browser, so there's nothing on a server to delete. For confidential contracts, medical records, or client files, "never uploaded" is a stronger guarantee than "deleted later."
vs LocalPDF (a fellow on-device tool)
LocalPDF shares our core idea — process files in the browser, upload nothing — and it's a good tool. The practical difference is breadth and transparency: LocalPDF offers about six core tools, while OnDevicePDF offers 25+ across organizing, converting, securing, and optimizing PDFs. We also publish a tool-by-tool data-handling page that names the one feature (advanced PDF Editor operations) which uses a temporary backend, so you never have to take "100% local" on faith.
One thing we won't pretend
OnDevicePDF isn't 100% server-free either: the advanced PDF Editor uploads your file for six specific operations (edit text, edit link, edit form field, redact area, OCR, and find & replace), then auto-deletes it. We'd rather tell you exactly where that line is than claim a guarantee we can't keep. The full breakdown is on our data-handling page.
