The story
Most of us have uploaded a PDF to an online tool without really knowing what happens next. Where is the file stored? Is it deleted? Is a copy kept? Who can access it? Those questions usually go unanswered — which is uncomfortable when the document is a contract, an ID, a tax form, or a medical record.
OnDevicePDF was built around a simple idea: local-first processing by default, with explicit disclosure whenever an advanced workflow needs temporary backend support. Most tools run entirely in your browser, so files never leave your device. The few advanced PDF Editor features that do use a server (such as OCR and complex text edits) are labeled, and those jobs are encrypted and auto-deleted. Privacy here isn't about hiding data — it's about knowing exactly where it is.
Copy-and-paste descriptions
Use any of these verbatim. They're written to be accurate about how the product handles files.
One line
OnDevicePDF is a free suite of 25+ PDF tools that run in your browser — most process files entirely on your device, so they never get uploaded to a server.
Short (≈50 words)
OnDevicePDF is a privacy-first PDF toolkit with 25+ tools for merging, splitting, compressing, converting, signing, and protecting PDFs. Most tools run entirely in the browser, so files never leave your device. A few advanced PDF Editor features use secure, temporary backend processing that is encrypted and auto-deleted — always clearly disclosed. It's free, with no account required.
Medium (≈90 words)
OnDevicePDF is a free, privacy-first PDF toolkit that keeps your documents on your own device. Unlike most online PDF tools, which upload your file to a server before doing anything, the large majority of OnDevicePDF's 25+ tools process files entirely in the browser using WebAssembly and JavaScript — nothing is uploaded. The exception, a handful of advanced PDF Editor operations such as OCR and complex text editing, uses secure temporary backend processing that is encrypted and auto-deleted, and this is disclosed on the site. There are no accounts, no watermarks, and it works offline after first load.

Story angles
A few directions we think are genuinely interesting — happy to provide data, technical detail, or commentary for any of them.
- What actually happens to your file when you use a "free online PDF tool" — and why most of them upload it to a server you can't see.
- Local-first software is quietly returning: how browser + WebAssembly now handle work that used to require a server.
- Privacy-safe document workflows for regulated fields — handling contracts, medical records, and client files without third-party uploads.
- The honest-marketing angle: a privacy tool that publicly labels the few features that do touch a server, instead of claiming "100%" and hoping nobody checks.
On the record about data handling
We publish exactly which tools run on-device and which use temporary backend processing. See our data-handling page for the full tool-by-tool detail — and hold us to it.
