Error messages this fixes

These usually mean the file's internal index is broken or the download was cut short, while the pages themselves are still inside:

• "Failed to load PDF document" (Chrome and Edge)
• "Adobe Acrobat Reader could not open the file because it is either not a supported file type or because the file has been damaged"
• "The file is damaged and could not be repaired"
• "This file can not be opened because it is corrupted or damaged" (Acrobat on phones)
• "There was an error opening this document. The file is damaged"

What it can and cannot fix

Fixable: a broken or missing cross-reference table, a wrong startxref, junk before the header or after the end, a missing header, files damaged by a text-mode transfer, and downloads that stopped part way. For a cut-off file, every page that is still in the file is kept, and pages whose content was lost are named rather than hidden.

Not fixable here: text that shows as scrambled characters or boxes (that is font damage inside the pages, not a broken file) and content that is simply no longer in the file. The tool says so instead of handing back a file that only looks repaired.
